SDP 2007

Siena Design Project

What is the Siena Design Project?
Inspired by the Apple Design Project the SDP is an event for sharing educational interaction design projects among Education Centres in Europe.
The SDP is promoted by the University of Siena with the joint effort of the founding University (Interaction Design Centre, University of Limerick and Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm) and Domus Academy, Milan.

The objective is to make of the SDP a long lasting initiative, which will motivate the students, documenting the evolution of information design educational practices, making them available to a large educational audience in Europe.

The SdP2007 is held at the Certosa di Pontignano, Siena, from the 17th to 21st of June 2007 (download the .pfd file)

‘Illumasol’, short for illuminated parasol, is an interactive projected display located inside the roof of a 12ft parasol. Using camera, projectors, and detection sensors, it provides a platform for a diversity of applications. In designing this concept our objective was to provide a focal point for Bedford Row, adding colour, and bringing people together to stop and interact with the space and each other. It also serves as a reminder of the street’s theatrical history, helping in the search for its new identity.

In a near future, web presence in combination with physical sensors of our doings will take a larger role in our social context. WeAgree takes part in this development by funneling the information to a intelligible form and proposing ways to support the negotiations and social relationship between teenagers and parents. It is in a greater sense an application that is intended to enhance the communication between teenagers and adults.

The relationship between parents and teenagers may sometimes be constrained and put under even more stress when the child is at some other physical place. WeAgree has as a mobile and web application an objective to aid the negotiations that occur between teenagers and parents. Through the web interface, parents are given an opportunity to also communicate with other parents whose children are in the same area as their own.
This new concept allows negotiations that both parents and teenagers are content with. By allowing a flow of messages that are free from connotations between parent and child, the system may move a possible conflict from a telephone conversation to a place where both child and parent is physically present. The idea is that the system will allow a child to experience a greater sense of freedom at the same time as the parents feel confident and safe. One does not feel surveilled but rather as a part of a prior negotiation made with the parents.

Dongmuron is a soft modular toy-robot, covered with a smart fabric that changes colour and patterns, for building life-like robots.
Dongmuron has a flexible body with holes into which smaller modules can be attached to create different animals. The robot identity is defined by changing shape and according to the level of care (e.g. hugging) and feeding.

The aim of the project is to reveal the emotional aspect of stars observation by involving the users in a “promenade among the stars” and to enable the dissemination of scientific content regarding astronomy in a playful way.
We design an environment which supports both scientific dissemination of content about astronomy and the enjoyment of astronomical observations. By walking in the park the constellations reveal themselves to the users.
The light configurations in the park represent those constellation which are visible in that specific period of the year.
The system is composed by:
- personal device which supports activities of orienting, pointing and bookmarking,
- wereable artefact for visualizing and reproducing music related to stars and
- pubblic point for deepening astronomy contents through other disciplines (such as mythology, history, music, etc..).

The Siena Design Project was held in Siena, Certosa di Pontignano, from the 17th to 21st of June 2007.
