Siena Design Project

What is the Siena Design Project?
Inspired by the Apple Design Project the SDP is an event for sharing educational interaction design projects among Education Centres in Europe.
The SDP is promoted by the University of Siena , but it is expected to become the joint effort of the founding University (Siena, Limerick, Stockholm) and the Domus Academy.

The objective is to make of the SDP a long lasting initiative, which will motivate the students, documenting the evolution of information design educational practices, making them available to a large educational audience in Europe.

The SdP2006 is held at the Certosa di Pontignano, Siena, from the 23rd until the 26th of July 2006.

"Lorg Láimhe"
The essence of this project is communication and our aim was to explore social interaction within a public space. Gestures, as a form of non-verbal communication, can be exchanged across distinctive and remote locations, linking one public space to another. Our study of the traditional market in Limerick city builds on the universality of relating to people through hand gestures. Preserving a degree of anonymity and ambiguity provides a platform for open communication between everybody. Passers by are encouraged through their own curiosity to interact with a pair of moving hands on the screen. They become aware that another person is interacting with them at another location in the city during participation.

Energise: Play and free-movement in a designed urban playground as a physical activity to energize commuters.
Our project proposes a series of designed "zones" in which users can participate in free-movement to energize themselves, either as a personal exercise or a networked social activity. The activity uses urban architecture, furniture and signage to achieve this goal.
It encourages:
- [re-]discovering of new areas within the city
- interaction with others of same interest
- exercise + fitness
- creativity + fun
